How to Create a Workout Routine from Scratch

Guess what – The workout routine is only 20% of the battle.

Google has made it very easy for us to get answers to any question we can possibly imagine. It took me about 30 seconds to find this customizable workout builder on Shape.com. I’m impressed with the workout options and instructional videos; however, for most people this won’t be the key to a successful workout routine.

I’ve already checked Facebook 3 times since I’ve been Googling and typing this post. We, especially ladies, get distracted very easily! How many of you are really going to workout in front of your computer or even with a printed plan? If you’re like me, you need a way to focus all of your attention on the workout.

Let’s say that you aren’t able to go to a gym, you are totally against DVD workouts, you hate running, and you’ve tried everything on this list. You are intent on working out on your own and you need a routine.

Here are 5 steps I recommend for creating your workout routine:

1. Define your goals.

Why do you want to workout? What does the end result look like and feel like? Get a clear picture in your mind of what you want, and get inspired to achieve it.

2. Gather a plan to fit your needs.

Look for people with similar goals as you and see what they are doing. There’s no one size fits all solution to losing weight or changing your body composition. The key concepts will always be the same; however, your body will respond in it’s own way. There could be trial and error involved along your journey. Here and Here are a couple good resources.

3. Find a workout partner.

DON’T DO THIS ALONE – Ideally, you have a partner to physically exercise with you, but if you don’t, at least get an accountability partner. Make sure someone is checking up on you and holding you to your commitment.

Don’t Google – Connect with your spouse or BFF or with online communities like Beachbody or MyFitnessPal.

4. Create a game or challenge with your workout partner.

The goal is to add excitement and combat boredom. Keep track of how many push ups you can do or how long you can hold plank. Compete against each other for a prize. Maybe you cook dinner for them or treat them to a movie. Make it fun.

5. Commit to a schedule for one month.

Don’t get discouraged if you don’t see results in 10 minutes. Results take TIME and CONSISTENCY. Stick to your plan for at least a month. If you see zero results, change it up and go for another month. DO NOT QUIT!

Maybe you weren’t expecting me to go this route.

I want you to understand that the exercises are simple.
The follow through is hard.

Use these tips to help you see the full picture and actually succeed this time.

I KNOW you can do it.
