How to Make Bean Burgers

Have you ever tried a black bean burger?

Black bean burgers are becoming more and more common at restaurants because of the demand for vegetarian and vegan menu options. From my experience, the restaurants serve MorningStar Farms brand black bean and veggie burgers which are tasty, but not homemade.

After finding that frozen black bean burgers are about $2 per patty at my local grocery store, I decided to make my own!

My black bean burgers are based off this recipe from Annies-Eats. I make a few substitutions based on what I have on hand at the time, and I always add jalapeno and extra red pepper!  Spicy = yummy!

While I had the food processor out and the kitchen a mess, I whipped up these Lemon-Scallion White Bean Patties too.  The flavor of these reminds me of salmon patties interestingly enough.  The concept is the same, but the flavor is much lighter.

After I mix the ingredients, I freeze the patties individually for quick meals.  It took 40 minutes from start to finish to make 14 patties.

Estimated cost is about $6 or 43 cents each compared to store bought $2!

I’d say it’s worth the extra time because I know exactly what ingredients are in the patties, and I can customize them to my tastes by changing the veggies or spices.

You can eat bean patties on a bun with your favorite toppings, or slice them into a salad (or slather them with mustard, Ha!).
