Bikram Yoga – My Experience

I’ve been talking about trying “hot yoga” for a few years.

As 2014 is coming to an end, I felt the need to GO FOR IT and finally attend a hot yoga class.

I’ll admit – Bikram Yoga was a little a lot intimidating.  The website explained several rules and procedures that made it easy for me to keep putting it off.  I was going to try hot yoga that is not Bikram style, but the scheduling didn’t work out, so Sunday morning I headed to Midtown Bikram Yoga.

Here’s what I liked:

1. The Heat – the room feels like hot, humid Memphis summer.  Granted I might have had different feelings if I tried this class during the summer, but on a rainy, 30 degree November day, it was amazing. When I closed my eyes, I was at the beach. ahhh

2. The Postures – many of the postures were familiar to me. The heat gave me better flexibility to hold the postures longer or in a more advanced way.

3. The SWEAT – after only a few minutes, I started to feel like I was in a swimming pool.  The sweat is intense. As we say in INSANITY – if your shins are sweating, then it’s a good workout.  My shins sweated in the first 10 minutes of this class. It’s gross and awesome all at the same time.

Tips: Don’t wear contacts. Wear as little clothing as possible. Take another towel to dry off with after class!

I’m so glad I pushed through my comfort zone and tried this class.  I felt both rejuvenated and exhausted, and I definitely want to go back.

Lesson: When you want to try something new, schedule it on your calendar within the next month.  Things that get on the calendar get done!

Let me know if you’ve tried a hot yoga class!
