What to Do When You Don’t Feel Like: Showing Up

Today I am sharing a real life – this just happened this morning – thing called “what to do when you don’t feel like showing up.”

We’ve all had these mornings when staying in bed seems like a really good idea. There’s no feeling of urgency or motivation. There are lots of feelings of sluuuuuuuugish resistance.

Who’s felt this way?

Everyone, right?

What do you do when you don’t feel like showing up?

You have options.

  1. Don’t show up.
  2. Show up anyway and be in a bad mood.
  3. Find a way to show up as your best self

Wow – #1 and #2 seem like pretty poor choices.

Let’s take a closer look at #3.

Use your rituals

Rituals help to get you in the mood or mode for doing something. Much like an athlete has a pre-shot “waggle” – you also have these cues to let yourself know what’s about to happen.

Your morning routine is a prime space to refine to set yourself up for the best day. Rather it’s quiet reflection, or hard core exercise, all that matters is it helps you get your head in the game. Once you start going through the motions of your day, your mind will catch up – you will start to feel like it.

Or not.. What if that doesn’t work?

Use your layers of accountability

Your presence is needed in this day. People are counting on your to provide your skills or your contribution. Think about the way you want your boss, family or peer group to experience you today. Do you want them to see grumpy you or creative productive you? Maybe you’re being paid for a job or simply gave your word. Do what you said you’re going to do and show up!

Now If this doesn’t work, then you’re in trouble. LOL

Kidding! I have one more thing that always works.

Move your body – jump up and down

Yep. It’s simple and silly. Please give me credit for not saying burpees! Lol. Just bounce, hop, chair dance, shake it out, or shake it off.

We all have those days when we just don’t feel like showing up.

Give yourself a break.

Try these things.

Show up anyway. Smile.

Fake it till you make it.

You got this.
