Life Hacks – Is a year a long time or a short time?

Do you ever feel like time is flying by?

Facebook’s “On this day” feature is one of my favorite things to check each day. I enjoy reminiscing about old friends and events.

Lately though, it’s been a little concerning that things that feel like “the other day” happened 2 and 3 years ago.

Is that just part of getting older?

I polled my following asking “Is a year a long time or a short time?” and over 40 people commented with nearly the same answer.

It’s all relative. It depends.

Thanks, guys! That’s a great answer! Lol

It’s true though. I think our concept of time comes down to two things.

Age.

The older you are the more “time” you have behind you {duh} so when you think of 1 year out of 33, that seems like much less than 1 year out of 10. Makes sense.

Emotion.

Time flies when you’re having fun, right?  It also drags by when you’re dreading something or nervous or generally disliking your situation.

Depending on where you are in life at this moment, you may be experiencing time differently than your neighbor.

Consider this example from The 10X Rule :

How many Wednesdays do you have left in your life?

Let’s say you’re 30 and will live to be 80 – you’ve got 2,600 Wednesdays left.

That sounds like a lot! Right?

But what if I said you had 2,600 dollars left for your life? You’d think about  that different. You’d conserve it, use it for something special, and appreciate it.

How can we appreciate and use our limited time more wisely?

The truth is we ALL have limited time. We just don’t know HOW limited it really is.

What can we do today?

A simple exercise.

Take 3 minutes and answer these questions:

  • Where was I this time last year?
  • Where am I now?
  • Where do I want to be this time next year?

This could be in your career, relationships, emotional intelligence, anything!

I’d love to know your thoughts!  Send me a note after you do your exercise!

This is Part 1 in a series called Life Hacks! Send me a note to suggest a topic!
