I’m Not Ready…

Have you ever heard a voice in your head say “I’m not ready”?

To me, that voice is FEAR talking. Each time we hear that voice we can make a choice.

Listen to it.

or

Ignore it.

Lately, I’m sharing some takeaways from my time at Business Mastery last week.

Between my volunteering duties, I took a bunch of notes on my phone, and I’m putting them into action.

Notes are only good if you USE them, so here’s something I captured.

Is it true that you’re not ready?

Facts could lead you to believe you’re not experienced, brave enough, or qualified enough etc.

I bet you know from life experience that you’re hardly ever “ready” for the new job, family, kid, project, speech, certification, race – you name it.

I believe being ready happens in the process of taking the first steps.

During the first steps of anything, you will learn valuable information through practice – trial and error.  You’ll gain confidence and a sense of accomplishment when you make progress.

Here’s a personal story:

In my professional life, I’m a leader. It’s a natural position for me that I enjoy.  However, in social settings, I tend to hang back and let other people lead.

Knowing this about myself, I decided I need to stretch outside of my norm. In advance of the trip, I committed that if anyone asked for a team leader, I would raise my hand.

Of course, someone asked, and I shyly raised my hand. I didn’t know for sure if I was ready because I had only 2 previous experiences as a volunteer.

I’m happy to report that I didn’t die. I rolled with my duties as leader and supported my team to the best of my ability. It went well which strengthens my confidence to try it again. Yay!

When have you started something you didn’t feel ready to start? Share with me!

This is Part 3 in a series called FEAR. Here’s Part 1 and 2 if you missed it.
